Flea Market

Oh, how I love a colorful scrappy quilt! Using remnants left over from other projects has got to be in my DNA, because I just can't stop making these bonus quilts.

This one took a while, though, because the pieces are small and there are a lot of seams to line up. But I can't complain...the project kept me indoors in air conditioned comfort while our temps were near 100 degrees.

After cutting all the print signature pieces and little muslin triangles, I chain stitched them together without stopping to press. No iron means a cooler room! I used Elizabeth, my sweet little Singer 404 to get perfect stitching.

I pressed everything early one morning and began laying them on my design wall. I intended them to be entirely random, but I had to shift some to balance the colors. I sewed them together in four sections, carefully matching seams.

Flea Market ended up 58” square after I added a natural muslin 4” border. Quilting was done with my Janome MC9400.  I made free motion swirls diagonally on the lattice design. For the border I stitched 2” grids following the lines of the blocks, using a ruler guide.  Not perfect, but good enough!

It's a vintage look that I hope would make Granny Hill and Granny Rose proud.

Bubble Gum Pink

Bubble Gum Pink
What do you make with bright pink fabric?

A cute bubble gum pink baby quilt, that's what.

Stripes, checks, dots, woodgrain and marbled prints look great together. I added a pale pink background with splash of yellow for contrast. Using kite blocks, I created a spinning pattern framed with polka dot sashing.

Simple 2” grid quilting is the perfect choice, using the palest of pink thread with a straight stitch. I used a ruler with my walking foot to stay aligned. Bubble Gum Pink finished at 45” square. This one's quick and easy to sew.

Plans for this hot week: hide in my sewing room!

Kokopelli

Tribal and southwest fabrics combined with neutral prints make a striking modern quilt.

Large 9” triangles were created in black, brown, gray, tan, and cream colors using half hexagons and equilateral triangles.

I added a narrow black border, then framed with 4” strips. Quilting in dark gray thread in a straight stitch, I made two rows along each seam of the triangle side edges. I changed to a scallop stitch along the outer borders.

Backing and binding are a dark gray and cream swirl print. Kokopelli is 62” square. It's been on my list for a while, and was so fun to create.

Flying Flowers

These navy and peach floral prints were recently gifted to me by a lovely fabric angel. She was moving and needed to downsize, so I got a whole carload of material. It will definitely be put to good use, so thanks again for your generosity!

I cut flying geese blocks, then arranged them around a peach plaid center square to form a blossom. All the blocks are identical, separated by 2” sashing in the aqua mini floral background fabric. I added a few navy cornerstones for accent.

I used one of the prints for backing and binding. I quilted using the Elvira ruler to create flowing lines across the flowers in aqua thread. On the sashing rows, I used the same ruler for another stitch design.

This was a fun one to sew, perfect for summer. Flying Flowers is 46” x 56” finished size. It is one of many I have planned for donation to special people who need a snuggle quilt. My way of paying it forward!
